Dragons vs Grey Falcon

April 25, 2011

A herping trip goes all twitchy at the end...

Myself and two clients spent a warm dusty afternoon tracking down Dragons at sand country sites south of Alice Springs. Despite cool breezy conditions we sighted and photographed 3 dragon species and a very nice and tolerant Gould's Goanna. I include one of my photos (nowhere near as good as yours Jorgen).

A completely unexpected treat on the way home on the Stuart Highway was a close flyby from a Grey Falcon c.5km south of Alice Springs Jail. It was all over too quickly to consider taking a photo but for me this was still a treat. This was the closest to Alice I've seen a Grey Falcon so far, and ironic that I've put so many hours recently into finding one then it finally appears when I'm not even birding!
